Welcome to Worship Guitar Tips!
I hope you will find these tips useful as you serve our Lord and Savior with your talent.
1 It’s not what you play, it’s what you don’t play. Leave out the mistakes: This means
PRACTICE!
2 Pray diligently and repeat tip number 1 daily.
3 Listen to what others are doing around you. Do not fight it, play your part.
4 Never play notes or licks over vocals and don’t doodle between songs.
5 When playing with another guitar use a capo to get a different voicing for chords. This feels
great under the lyric (which is the most important component).
6 Learn how to play simply. However, this does not mean leaving out the basic changes in the song. Learn the chords you don’t know and how to communicate them with the other players
and the worship leader.
7 Think about what your right hand is doing in relation to the other guitars on the stage.
Don’t play exactly the same strum pattern with the same chord in the same position as
the other players. Learn to play rhythm finger style.
8 Learn how to count. There are instrumentalists that can get more out of one note in time than a chainsaw of lead blasting. This will just get in the way.
9 Get a tuner – if it’s out of tune, back down until you can fix it.
10 God deserves our best, sloppy and unprofessional will not cut it. It’s not that hard to dig out your own chord charts and teach yourself. Most of the time and for the most part you can learn the song and play it without a chart. Get your gear together, be on time and think about what you are there for.
